WINNIPEG – The 2009 TELUS Cup host committee today announced the arrival of the National Midget Championship trophy to the Capital District Region.

The TELUS Cup trophy will be on display this weekend at the Selkirk Recreation Centre at both Friday’s Manitoba Junior Hockey League game between the Selkirk Steelers and Waywayseecappo Wolverines and the Manitoba Midget AAA Midget Hockey League contest featuring the Winnipeg Wild and the Winnipeg Thrashers on Saturday.

The opportunity to see the trophy will run in conjunction with several other festivities scheduled for both nights, including the raising of the 2009 TELUS Cup host banner and the unveiling of a banner promoting tickets sales for the April 20-26 event.

As the 2009 TELUS Cup Host Team, the Thrashers will participate in an on-ice, pre-game ceremony before tomorrow’s MJHL contest to officially welcome the tournament to the City of Selkirk and area. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Thrashers then take to the ice to host their archrivals the Winnipeg Wild in a match-up of the two top teams in the MMAAAHL East Division. Game time is at 8 p.m.

In addition to the on-ice ceremonies both nights, the 2009 TELUS Cup host committee will also have a booth set up at the games to answer questions about the event, solicit volunteers and take ticket orders. A ticket package for the entire tournament is priced at just $79 (plus convenience fee if applicable) and is also available through Ticketmaster.

And in advance of Friday evening’s festivities, the TELUS Cup visited both Robert Smith School and Ecole Bonaventure in Selkirk. The TELUS Cup host committee is working with various Selkirk and area schools on a joint initiative that will see each team in the tournament have a specific school assigned to them as hosts.
