Matthew Duchene Named Captain of Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 Team

CALGARY, AB – Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, has announced that Matthew Duchene (Haliburton, ON/Brampton, OHL) will be the captain of Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament.

The event runs from August 12-16, 2008 in Piestany, Slovakia and Breclav, Czech Republic.

Also, Hockey Canada has announced that four players will serve as alternate captains. They are Jared Cowen (Allan, SK/Spokane, WHL), Ryan Ellis (Hamilton, ON/Windsor, OHL), Taylor Hall (Kingston, ON/Windsor, OHL) and Brayden Schenn (Saskatoon, SK/Brandon, WHL).

Canada’s roster of 22 players for the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka was announced on Tuesday, August 5th, after a four-day selection camp, which included on-ice practices and three intersquad games.

Duchene, Ellis, Hall and Schenn all were members of Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team in April as it won gold at the 2008 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Kazan, Russia.

Canada’s players and staff will depart for Europe on Wednesday afternoon and will arrive in Piestany, Slovakia on Thursday, August 7th. Canada will face the United States in Trnava, Slovakia on August 9th and the Czech Republic on August 10th in Breclav, Czech Republic in pre-tournament action. The 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament begins on August 12th with Canada facing Switzerland.
