QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC – The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is hosting its first ever international skills challenge as part of the IIHF’s celebrations around 100 Years of International Ice Hockey. The IIHF Skills Challenge will take place in Quebec City on Sunday, May 4 at the PEPS Centre (9 a.m. local time).

The event, which takes place during the opening weekend of the 2008 IIHF World Championship, will include 105 participants (ages 13-16) from 30 different IIHF member federations. Participants will travel from as far as New Zealand for the chance to compete.

As the host country, Hockey Canada’s Canadian Skills Challenge finals will be held in conjunction with the IIHF event. The Canadian Skills Challenge will take place in Quebec City on Saturday, May 3 at the PEPS Centre (9 a.m. local time).

The top male player, female player, male goaltender and female goaltender from the Canadian Skills Challenge will move forward to the IIHF Skills Challenge.

Hockey Canada worked closely with the IIHF to develop the international skills challenge which is based on five individual tests and three goaltender tests taken from Hockey Canada’s National Skills Standards and Testing Program (NSST). The tests are designed to measure skill level in a fun and easy fashion in which Minor Hockey Associations can host their own individual skills challenges.

The Canadian Skills Challenge is composed of a declared male player and female player from each participating Branch, as well as the top five male goaltenders and the top five female goaltenders from across Canada (all goaltenders were selected based on Branch certified NSST scores submitted to Hockey Canada).

The Canadian Skills Challenge was open to all Hockey Canada registered minor hockey players, male and female, 13 years old or younger as of (peewee age).
