Today, the City of Brampton celebrated the opening of a world-class community centre named after hometown hero Cassie Campbell, a three-time Olympian and former Captain of Canada's National Women's Hockey Team.
"The Cassie Campbell Community Centre is a remarkable facility of which we can all be very proud,” said Mayor Susan Fennell. "Bramptonians and community sports organizations will enjoy new and exciting recreation opportunities and this new facility is destined to become an icon in our city. Cassie Campbell is proud of her Brampton roots and we are proud to recognize Cassie and her amazing contribution to women's hockey by naming this centre in her honour."
Cassie Campbell, one of the most successful and recognized players in women’s hockey, holds 21 medals from Olympic, international and national championships - 17 of them gold. She is the first woman to provide colour commentary for CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada.
“Growing up in Brampton and going to community centres to play sports, I know first hand how important this facility will be, especially for our youth, and for that I am extremely proud," said Cassie Campbell.
Located at Sandalwood Parkway and Chinguacousy Road, it is the City's largest community centre at 165,000 square feet. The facility provides a broad range of athletic and leisure services for all residents of Brampton, including a citywide fitness centre, figure skating rink, hockey rink and pool. The Cassie Campbell Community Centre is also home to a new community police station.
The centre features an extensive outdoor program with tennis and basketball courts, splash pads, three outdoor soccer fields, with two fields converting to a cricket pitch, and a neighbourhood park. In addition there is an indoor running track, community meeting rooms and the City's first community gymnasium.
"As a long-time supporter of Canadian women’s hockey, we're proud to be working with the City of Brampton and Cassie Campbell to encourage people to reach their full potential by committing to a healthy and active lifestyle," said Bob Nicholson, Hockey Canada.
“The NHL congratulates Cassie Campbell and the City of Brampton on the opening of a world-class community
center," said Gary Bettman, Commissioner, National Hockey League.
"As Chief of The Peel Regional Police, I know that without the public's help and support we could not enjoy the success that we have as a police service. Our success as an organization is only made possible because of our community supports and our ties with the residents of Peel. A key factor in this success is our community stations and the personnel that work in them. I am extremely proud of this new facility and the officers and civilian support staff that work here,” said Chief Mike Metcalf.
“Coca-Cola Bottling Company has a longstanding tradition of supporting our communities and active living,” said Darren Carey, Sales Centre Manager, Coca-Cola Bottling Company. "We are proud to be a part of the official opening of the new Cassie Campbell Community Centre."
The Cassie Campbell Community Centre is part of the City’s Making Great Things Happen initiative, which brings to citizens two new community centres and two renovated and expanded recreation centres as part of a $120 million capital program.
The other three projects in this initiative:
o In June 2007, the new Brampton Soccer Centre opened at Dixie Road and Sandalwood Parkway
o In September 2007, the Earnscliffe Recreation Centre on Eastbourne Drive reopened its doors following an expansion and extensive renovations
o In October 2008, the Century Gardens Recreation Centre will reopen with improvements that will help meet the future healthy lifestyle needs of the community.
