A talent on and off the ice, Ashley Dugay takes on the role of Team Atlantic's assistant coach.
Ashley Duguay first stepped onto the ice at the age of 3 in her hometown of Quispamsis, NB.
“I started out playing ringette,” Duguay recalls. “Then one day at the arena, I watched a hockey game and decided I wanted to play that instead.”
She’s been playing hockey ever since.
Duguay is currently in her fifth year at St. Thomas University in Fredericton. She recently completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree, and is now studying Education.
Throughout her post-secondary schooling, Duguay has played hockey with the St. Thomas Tommies. Last year, she ended the season with the second-highest points total on the team.
Over the past few years, she has also played in the Canada Winter Games and with Hockey New Brunswick.
Balancing school and hockey can be a challenge, but Duguay is able to make it work thanks to her passion for the game.
“I love playing hockey and will definitely continue playing when I am finished school,” she remarks.
At this year’s National Women’s Under-18 Tournament in Napanee, ON, Duguay has found herself behind the bench as the new assistant coach for Team Atlantic.
While coaching offers a new vantage point of the game, “so far the experience has been amazing,” she observes. “It’s very uplifting, and the girls are great.”
In the future, Duguay hopes to stay involved with hockey, both on and off the ice.
And when it comes to coaching, she says she’s hooked.
Concludes Duguay: “I love playing hockey, and I love coaching just as much.”
