Mississauga, Manitoba Claim National Titles in Charlottetown, PEI

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – The Mississauga Chiefs beat the Brampton Canadette-Thunder 3-2 in overtime to win the gold medal in the club team final of the 2008 Esso Women’s Nationals on Saturday night.

Cherie Piper scored her second goal of the game at 9:45 of the second overtime to give the Chiefs the victory. Piper also scored at 7:32 of the third period to tie the game. Brampton held a 2-0 lead in the third before Mississauga mounted the comeback.

In the senior women’s final, Team Manitoba scored three goals in the opening 5:30 of the first period en route to a 5-1 victory over PEI. Ashley Jaffray led Manitoba with two goals.

Both Mississauga and Manitoba were awarded the Abby Hoffman Cup, awarded each year to champions of the Esso Women’s Nationals. Brampton and PEI won the Fran Rider Cup as runners-up.

In the senior women’s championship bronze medal game, Nova Scotia beat New Brunswick 3-2 in a shootout. Jocelyn LeBlanc (Moncton, NB/Dalhousie University, CIS) scored the only goal of the shootout to give her team the win. In the club team bronze medal game, the Calgary Oval X-Treme defeated the Minnesota Whitecaps 5-2. Hayley Wickenheiser had two goals and an assist for Calgary.

Both Nova Scotia and Calgary were awarded the Maureen McTeer Trophy, awarded to third-place teams at the Esso Women’s Nationals.

Hockey PEI played host to the Esso Women’s Nationals for the fourth time, but this was the first time the event had been held in Charlottetown. Summerside, PEI has played host to the tournament three times.

The Women’s Nationals has been held annually since 1982. It brings together some of the top female hockey players in Canada and the United States.
