Producers for The Sports Network got their first glimpse of the Cominco Arena on Wednesday and gave it a glowing review.
TSN, the Canadian 24-hour sports channel, will be in Trail on Nov. 11 to broadcast the gold medal game of the 2007 World Junior A Challenge.
Producer Martin Paul and technical producer Dan MacLean, of Cardhu Productions, took a tour of the facility with Trail Parks and Recreation facilities manager Larry Plotnikoff and Dave Rugg, the facility¹s maintenance foreman.
“They were very impressed,” said Plotnikoff. “Martin thought it was a first-rate facility and, for broadcasting, it’s going to be an excellent venue.”
Paul said he was impressed the minute he arrived in Trail.
“When I first drove in, it’s truly God’s country. And to have an arena in this setting is spectacular.”
And it only got better once he walked inside the refurbished 58-year-old arena.
“As soon as you walk in you can see it’s a great arena, especially for the fans,” said Paul. “It must be a real treat to watch a game in there.
“I think it’s going to show up great on TV and that’s the first thing we look for.”
The tour took them through the scoreboard clock control room, which was outfitted with approximately $40,000 worth of equipment and refurbishing over the summer.
“It’s state of the art,” said Paul. “There’s nothing like it in junior hockey rinks in the smaller part of the country.”
There will be a few changes to the rink leading up to the tournament. The ice will be shaved down and new logos will be painted for the tournament.
Paul said the production crew will be in Trail a few days before the final to watch some other games and the technical crew will arrive the night before and set up the day of the gold medal game.
