PRINCE GEORGE – Students in the leadership class at DP Todd Secondary are going the extra mile to ensure out of town teams competing at the RBC Royal Bank Cup feel right at home.

The students are proposing an ‘Adopt-a-Team’ program that would see students from throughout School District 57 choose an out of town team competing in the RBC Royal Bank Cup and attend the Games to cheer on their team. The school program has been a regular part of this championship for many years but this year it's proposed to be bigger than it's even been and for the first time ever it's being developed and coordinated by high school leadership students.

“The RBC Royal Bank Cup is attracting teams from all over Canada, and we want to make sure the teams feel welcome in Prince George,” says DP Todd Leadership student Carli Kerr.

Phil Beaulieu, VP of Marketing with the RBC Royal Bank Cup Host Committee says the program is a win-win for all involved. “The students not only get the chance to attend the Games, but they also have the opportunity to learn more about other areas of Canada,” say Beaulieu. “The teams benefit in knowing they’ll have a loud and proud cheering section at each game. “

The program also allows for a cultural exchange, as players from across the nation will take time during the event to visit schools to talk about their hometown, home province and their long journey to compete in the national championship.

The students will appear before the School Board this evening to present their proposal and seek the support of the Board in implementing the program. “I’m very proud of these students,” says DP Todd Leadership Teacher Don Homan. “They have designed this program on their own and are taking the initiative to make it happen,” says Homan.

It's expected that over the next few weeks the students will work with representatives from the School Board and the RBC Royal Bank Cup Host Committee to finalize details of the program. More information will be provided once the program is finalized.
