DAVOS, Switzerland – For the first time since 2003, and the 11th time overall, Canada has won the Spengler Cup.

In front of more than 7,000 fans at Vaillant Arena, Ryan Keller (Saskatoon, SK) scored the game-winning goal midway through the second period as Canada topped Russian side Salavat Yulaev Ufa 2-1 in Sunday’s championship game. The win capped a perfect 5-0 tournament for the Canadians, just the second time that has happened since Canada began sending a team to the annual tournament in 1984 – 2002 was the other perfect year.

Kirby Law (McCreary, MB) scored the other Canadian goal, and goaltender Curtis Joseph (Keswick, ON) made a number of big saves to lead Canada to the championship. Monday’s contest marked the seventh championship game appearance for Canada in the last eight years, and their third Spengler Cup in that span.

Canadian forward Yves Sarault (Valleyfield, QC), who finished second in tournament scoring with one goal and five assists, was named Canada’s top player in the 2007 Spengler Cup

The Spengler Cup, held annually since 1923, is the oldest professional international hockey tournament in the world.
