National Sledge Hockey Team Selection Camp to Be Held in Ottawa From September 6-9, 2007

CALGARY – Canada’s National Sledge Hockey Team, the defending Paralympic and World Sledge Hockey Challenge gold medalists, will hold its annual selection camp from September 6-9, 2007 in Ottawa, ON at the Bell Sensplex.

The selection camp roster will include all 18 players from the 2006-07 season, which included a gold medal at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge, held in Kelowna, BC in March, 2007.

Hockey Canada has invited 10 additional players to the selection camp Five of the additional players invited to camp are new to the program and were identified at regional tryout camps that were held in Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver this past spring.

Team Canada will practice on Friday (10 a.m.), Saturday (10 a.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m.). All sessions are two hours long, will be held at the Bell Sensplex and are open to the public. There will be media availability following all on-ice sessions.

The 28 invited players have been divided into two teams – Red and White – and will play a pair of games, Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m.

Team Canada’s coaching staff from the 2006-07 season returns: Jeff Snyder (Elmira, ON) is the head coach, joined by assistant coach Shawn Frydberg (Concord, ON). The coaching staff will work with Adam Crockatt, Manager of Men’s National Teams with Hockey Canada, in determining a 15-player roster that will represent Canada at the 2008 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, which will be held in March in Marlborough, MA.

Sledge hockey is the Paralympic version of ice hockey. It made its debut at the 1994 Paralympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. The fast-paced sport has grown in popularity since then.
