Team Canada Names Captain and Alternate Captains for Canada/ Russia Super Series

MOSCOW, RUSSIA – Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), along with head coach Brent Sutter and his coaching staff announced on Saturday that Milan Lucic (Vancouver, BC/ Vancouver, WHL) will be Canada’s captain for the upcoming Canada/Russia Super Series from August 27 – September 9. The Canada/Russia Super Series begins on August 27th in Ufa, Russia.

Head coach Sutter (Red Deer, AB/ Red Deer, WHL) and assistant coaches Peter DeBoer (Kitchener, OHL) and Benoit Groulx (Gatineau, QMJHL) also announced along with Hockey Canada and the CHL that Karl Alzner (Burnaby, BC/ Calgary, AB), Sam Gagner (Oakville, ON/ London, OHL) and Brandon Sutter (Red Deer, AB/ Red Deer, WHL) will serve as alternate captains.

The Canada/Russia Super Series, a one-time eight-game series featuring the best Under-20 players from Canada and Russia, will take place from August 27th to September 9th, with the first four games to be held in Russia, and the final four to be held in Canada.

The four Super Series games in Canada will be held in Winnipeg (September 4th), Saskatoon (September 5th), Red Deer (September 7th) and Vancouver (September 9th).The event starts in Russia with two games in Ufa (August 27th, 29th) and two games in Omsk (August 31st, September 1st).

All eight games, including the four games in Russia, will be broadcast by TSN/RDS and Rogers Sportsnet. Check your local listings for game times in your area.

The Canada/Russia Super Series will also serve to evaluate and develop Canada’s National Junior Team for the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Craig Hartsburg (Sault Ste. Marie, OHL), the head coach of Canada’s 2008 National Junior Team this December, will be actively involved in the preparation and evaluation of Canada’s team for the Super Series, working closely with Sutter and his staff, along with head scout Al Murray.

Please note the time difference between Russia and North America. Moscow is eight hours ahead of Eastern Time; Ufa is 10 hours ahead of Eastern Time while Omsk is 11 hours ahead of Eastern Time. Once media requests on-site have been attended to, we will make all efforts to accommodate as many interviews as possible within the team’s schedule. The team departs Moscow for Ufa on August 26th, remaining there through August 30th, when it transfers to Omsk. The team will leave Russia on September 2nd, arriving in Toronto that same night.
