Saint John, NB – There are sore feet, swollen limbs and some tired bodies, but lots of smiles and great memories as the Atlantic Marathon Game came to a close on Saturday Morning. Forty-two players from around the Atlantic Region gathered at the Rothesay Arena on Friday, January 19th beginning at 9:00am and played continuously until 9:00am on Saturday Morning. Two teams of 21 players played hockey continuously for 24 hours fulfilling their commitment to sponsors, the cause and their own personal goals in supporting opportunities for youth participation in our national pastime. The funds raised through the Atlantic Marathon Hockey Game will be distributed among the four Atlantic Hockey Branches to assist with programming which will provide underprivileged children with the opportunity to participate in our great game and to have the opportunity to learn the life lessons which being involved in an organized sport can teach youth.
“”What an incredible experience to be a part of,” stated Trevor Murphy, Manager of Hockey Canada’s Atlantic Regional Centre. “There was no one prouder of the participants than I was when the game ended – what an effort by all 42 players. When the planning for this event began, we had three goals – promote Hockey Canada’s Atlantic Office and the four Atlantic Hockey Branches, promote a positive hockey news story, and raise as much funding as possible for underprivileged children to play this great game. While our numbers are still being calculated we are very pleased and we feel that we have accomplished the three goals set out for this event.”
The final score of the game was 148-141 with Team North American Van Lines defeating Team Brett Chevrolet Cadillac to claim the Atlantic Marathon Cup and bragging rights. There were approximately 1,000 shots in this game which shows some offensive flare from the players and some solid goaltending skills from the six goaltenders involved.
“This was a special event and I am very proud of the efforts of our players, volunteers, officials and corporate partners,” said Brad Taylor, Event Manager of the Atlantic Marathon Game and Development Coordinator at the Atlantic Regional Centre. “There were a lot of positive comments being made at the end of the event by the participants and the one comment which was similar among all of them was that that they were proud that they were able to help the youth of our region. We are all better people because of hockey, and we hope that the children who benefit from this event will have the same sort of opportunities.
