Playoffs Set to Begin

The first round of playoffs has been set at the 2007 Esso Women’s Nationals in Salmon Arm, BC.

New Brunswick (1-3), which finished fourth in Pool A, will play Nova Scotia (0-4), which finished fifth in Pool A, in the first quarterfinal (9:30 a.m.) at the Sunwave Centre. Then, at 12:30 p.m., Ontario 2 (Etobicoke Dolphins), which finished third in Pool A with a 2-2 record, will face off against Team B.C., which won Pool B with a 3-0 mark.

Manitoba will meet PEI in Thursday’s relegation game (12 p.m.).

Three games were played on Wednesday, all of which had playoff implications.

Alberta beat Ontario 1 (Mississauga Aeros) in Wednesday night’s feature game, 4-1. Kaley Hall, Danielle Goyette, Gina Kingsbury and Hayley

Wickenheiser scored for Alberta, which went 4-0 to finish first in Pool A.

Sommer West scored the lone goal for Ontario 1, which went 3-1 and finished second in Pool A.

Earlier, New Brunswick defeated Nova Scotia 2-1. Gillian Paul scored once in the second period and added her second goal in the third period, which proved to be the game-winner.

Lindsay Taylor scored for Nova Scotia.

Also, B.C. clinched first in Pool B with an 8-3 victory over Manitoba.

Tamara Pickford, Kim Coates and Karen Thatcher each scored two goals for B.C., and Tanya Leone and Jenny Mahovlich added singles.

Shelley Cockerill, Deena Caplette and Kim Houde scored for Manitoba.
