RIGA, LATVIA – Canada stormed back from a 5-2 deficit in the second period, but came one goal short in a 5-4 loss on Saturday against Sweden in the 2006 IIHF World Championship semi-finals in Riga, Latvia.  Canada will now face Finland in the Bronze Medal game on Sunday, May 21st at 9:15 am (ET)/ 4:15 pm (local).  Sweden and the Czech Republic will face off in the Gold Medal game

jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Canada, on goals by Niklas Kronvall and Jorgen Jonssen.  Kyle Calder (Mannville, AB/ Chicago Blackhawks) cut the lead to 2-1, showing great patience in beating Swedish netminder Johan Holmqvist.  A goal by Tony Martensson restored Sweden two-goal lead, but Mike Comrie (Edmonton, AB/ Phoenix Coyotes) scored on a power play and Canada trailed 3-2.

Mikael Samuelsson and Jonas Nordquist scored early goals for Sweden in the second frame to take a 5-2 lead but Canada battled back to make a game of it.  Sidney Crosby (Cole Harbour, NS/ Pittsburgh Penguins) scored a late goal to give Canada life, only to be cross-checked in the face by Swedish forward Mika Hannula.  Hannula received a five-minute major, a game misconduct and once reviewed, was suspended for one additional game.

Crosby came back in the third period to set up Patrice Bergeron (Ancienne Lorette, QC/ Boston Bruins), getting Canada to within a goal of Sweden. Despite numerous chances, and outshooting Sweden 15-8 in the third period, and 32-25 overall, Canada couldn’t get the equalizer and must settle for a chance at a World Championship bronze medal on Sunday vs. Finland. Marc Denis (Montreal, QC/ Columbus Bluejackets) started the game, but was replaced by Alex Auld (North Bay, ON/ Vancouver Canucks) in the second period.

Earlier in the day, the Czech Republic advanced to the Championship Game with a 2-1 win over Finland.

Both medal games on Sunday, May 21st will be broadcast live from Latvia on TSN/RDS, the official broadcaster of Hockey Canada.
