The last time Canada faced Sweden was at the Thanksgiving Festival in Kitchener, ON less than a month ago. Canada defeated Sweden handily with a split squad; however, with Canada’s full team dressed tonight, they struggled to stay ahead of the Yellow and Blue.Canada opened the scoring in the first on a goal by Hayley Wickenheiser, but the Swedes were playing Canada fairly even as the shots on net after the first were 6-5 in favour of Canada. Sweden scored in the first thirty seconds of the second period to tie it at one with a power-play goal on a screened shot from the point. Canada regained its one goal lead when captain Vicky Sunohara put one past Swedish netminder, Kim Martin. With a 2-1 lead heading into the third, it was anyone’s game.Sweden was keeping up with Canada, and managed to tie things up with just over five minutes to go in the game with another power-play goal. Canada was unable to convert on a late power-play, but veteran forward Danielle Goyette was able to burry one on a great individual effort with just over a minute remaining to give Canada a 3-2 victory.
