Canada Will Play Czech Republic on Sunday in Gold Medal Game of 2005 IIHF Men's World Hockey Championship

Canada beats Russia 4-3 in semi-final game on Saturday

VIENNA – Canada advanced to the gold medal game of the World Hockey Championship for the third straight year after beating Russia 4-3 in its semi-final game on Saturday.  Canada has won back to back gold medals at the World Champoinship, in Finland in 2003 and Czech Republic in 2004.

Canada will take on Czech Republic on Sunday in the gold medal game of the 2005 IIHF World Hockey Championship, which will be broadcast LIVE on TSN/RDS, the official broadcaster of Hockey Canada, at 2pm ET / 11am PT on Sunday, .  The gold medal game will also be carried LIVE on the FAN radio network across Canada.

Canada jumped out to a four-goal lead on Saturday against Russia, including 3-0 in after the first period of play, and then held off Russian rally to take the 4-3 semifinal victory on Saturday. 

Canada had scoring from four different players, including three defensemen.  Wade Redden, Sheldon Souray, Dany Heatley and Ed Jovanovski scored for Canada to lead them to victory and on to the gold medal game on Sunday.

Martin Brodeur backstopped Team Canada, making 39 saves, and held back the Russian rally in the third period.

Joe Thornton, the leading scorer of the World Hockey Championship with 16 points in eight games, led the way for Canada offensively with three assists, while Rick Nash chipped in one assist to hold the second place in overall championship scoring with 15 points.  Canada’s Simon Gagne has 14 points to date, giving Canadian players the 1-2-3 rank in overall scoring at this year’s championship entering into Sunday’s gold medal game.

Thornton currently ranks in third place in Team Canada record book for most points all-time in one World Hockey Championship, behind Steve Yzerman (20 - 1990) and Eric Lindros (17 - 1993).
