GOALS FROM MARLEAU, GAGNE AND HEATLEY

RIGA, LATVIA – Canada’s Men’s World Championship team scored three goals in the second period by three different goal scorers on Monday en route to a 3-1 win over Latvia in a pre-World Championship game for the 2005 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship in Austria, April 30-May 15.

Janis Sprukts of Latvia opened the scoring at 14:43 of the first period and to take the lead 1-0 after the first period of play. Canada scored three unanswered goals in the second period to secure the victory.  Patrick Marleau started the goal scoring for Canada at 5:28 with a low shot on the ice, glove side. Simon Gagne scored just over three minutes later to go up 2-1 when he put a one-timer from the slot past Latvia goaltender Edgars Masalskis, with assists to line mates Rick Nash and Joe Thornton. Dany Heatley sealed the victory for Canada when he scored a pretty goal at 17:15 of the second period, cutting to the middle of the ice just over the blue line and then rifled a shot low glove side on Masalskis.

Martin Brodeur was again solid in goal for Canada and played the entire 60 minutes, with Roberto Luongo acting as his back-up.  Brodeur was named Canada’s player of the game, while Latvia’s goal scorer, Sprukts, was named player of the game for Latvia.

Canada has played three pre-Championship games and has a 2-1-0 record, after splitting games versus USA last week in Halifax and Quebec City.

Canada travels to Prague on Tuesday morning, and will practice Tuesday and Wednesday prior to closing out its pre-World Championship schedule on Thursday against the Czech Republic in Prague.
