Nineteen-year-old Shannon Deering and her 16-year-old sister Erica are quadriplegics. They were severely injured in a car accident last August 10. On their way to a movie with 3 other friends Shannon's car skidded out of control, hit a ditch and rolled. Shannon severed her spinal cord. Erica suffered severe spinal injuries when she was thrown from her seat and through the car's sunroof.

The girls recently met Cheryl Pounder at a Toronto rehab centre. They didn't want pity. They weren't feeling sorry for themselves. They were thrilled with the visit from the Olympian and just wanted to keep improving so they could continue on with their lives.

Pounder's visit was part of a community's effort to help the girls reach their goal. Ron Compton, one of the members of a committee formed to help the family, says they are working on the adage that "it takes a community to raise a child" Thousands of dollars have been raised and the handful of residents from the Port Perry area, east of Toronto, have organized a charity hockey game for Saturday March 5th to try and help ease the financial burder even more. This is where Pounder comes in. This past fall Brian Callery, another organizer, met Pounder at a speech to a group of financial advisors. After lunch they sat and talked and during the conversation Callery mentioned the girls predicament. Pounder said she would do anything she could to help. It turns out she also played some softball and had some things in common with Shannon who was on a softball scholarship in Florida...

Their dad is at home right now. He's trying to get the house rebuilt to accomadate 2 daughters who are quadripelegic. He's unemployed but he's hanging in trying to help the girls get on with their lives.

Tickets for the game are five dollars for youths and ten dollars for adults. Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact the Port Perry TD-Canada Trust branch at 165 Queen Street. Earmark the funds for the "Deering Trust Fund.:melmac@powergate.ca
