Canada Defeats USA's Women's Team 2-1 to Win The 2004 Four Nations Cup in Lake Placid, NY
LAKE PLACID, NY -- The 2004 Four Nations Cup finished with another memorable battle between women’s hockey power houses, Canada and the USA. Canada defeated the USA by a final score of 2-1.
The two teams faced off twice at this Four Nations Cup event. The first meeting was on Thursday, November 11, when Canada played the USA to a 1-1 draw at the University of Vermont in Burlington. The second being the gold medal final which saw Canada win 2-1.
The first period was fairly even with both teams capitalizing on their power play opportunities. Jayna Hefford opened the scoring at the 12 minute mark of the first period on a feed from defenceman Cheryl Pounder. The USA responded with a power play goal of their own when Natalie Darwitz buried one past Charline Labonte with just six seconds remaining in the period to knot things up at 1-1.
The second period was just as even as the first, but neither goalie would surrender a goal. With the game all tied up at 1-1, the game started to look very similar to the 2003 Four Nations Cup final in Sweden when both teams went to overtime with a 1-1 score.
Canada was able to take a quick lead in the third when Dana Antal converted on a beautiful pass from Danielle Goyette two minutes into the third to give Canada a 2-1 lead. This goal held up as the winner for Canada as they captured their seventh Four Nations Cup Titles in nine tries.
All players and staff will travel back on Monday, November 15 to various destinations throughout North America.
