CALGARY, ALBERTA – Twenty-two of Canada's top young women's hockey players were named on Monday by Hockey Canada and will represent Canada at the 2004 European Air Canada Cup, held from February 5-7 in Germany.

Players are named to Canada's National Women's Under-22 Team following extensive player scouting, led by Wally Kozak, Hockey Canada's Women's Program Head Scout. Kozak oversees a team of scouts and continues to attend games, tournaments and championships all over North America, including but not limited to, the Canada Winter Games, the Esso Nationals, CIS Nationals and the NWHL Championship.

Canada's roster at the 2004 European Air Canada Cup will include five players making their international debuts with the National Under-22 Program: Goaltender Jana Bugden (Providence, ECAC/ Cornerbrook, NFLD), defencemen Martine Garland (New Hampshire, EAST/ Toronto, ON) and Laura Stosky (Edmonton, NWHL/ Edmonton, ON) and forwards Stephanie Jones (New Hampshire, EAST/ Kimberley, BC) and Mariève Provost (Collège St-Jérôme, FQSE/ Laval, QC).

Team Canada's coaching staff, of Head Coach Margot Page (Niagara U., CHA) and assistant coaches Lisa MacDonald (Saint Mary's U., CIS) and Peter Smith (McGill, CIS), held a Development Camp in the summer, after which a team was named for a three-game series against the U.S. National Under-22 Team. Canada had 0-2-1 record in the series.

Four players from Canada's National Summer Under-22 Team are not available for this event, as they are attending the final selection camp for Canada's Women's World Championship Team this week in Calgary, AB: goaltender Charline Labonté, defenceman Carla MacLeod and forwards Gillian Apps and Sarah Vaillancourt.

Hockey Canada launched the National Under-22 Program during the 1998-1999 season. The program provides female hockey players under the age of 22 with an opportunity to be evaluated against the best Under 22 players in Canada. The program also provides the players with an opportunity to gain international experience which includes playing on a bigger ice surface, high performance coaching, international travel and different playing styles and systems. The Under-22 program identifies and evaluates players that potentially will move on to Canada's National Women's team and/or Women's Olympic team in the future.
