HANNOVER, GERMANY - Canada defeated Germany 5-2 on Sunday in their final game of the Deutschland Cup,  but finished in second place in the tournament when the United States beat Slovakia 4-0 and won the title on goals differential, which was the tie-breaker.

Canada and USA both finished the Deutschland Cup with identical records of 3-0-1, but the Americans' 16-8 goals for-goals against ratio was better than Canada's 16-12 ratio. Canada won their match-up versus USA on Thursday by the score of 5-3.  Canada's only loss in the tournament was to Slovakia, 5-3, on Friday.

Jeremy Adduono of Thunder Bay, Ont., scored two goals, Chris Herperger of Esterhazy, Sask., Domenic Pittis of Calgary and Brad Tapper of Toronto scored one each and Francois Bouchard of Brossard, Que., had two assists in Canada’s win over Germany on Sunday. Canada led 5-0 after 23 minutes, forcing a goaltending change by the Germans. Canada’s goaltender Jimmy Waite made 21 saves for the win.

No players currently on NHL rosters were on Canada's team for the Deutschland Cup, while USA had 10 NHL players in their lineup, including goalie Rick DiPietro of the New York Islanders who blanked the Slovakians in their game on Sunday.  Due to the uncertainty of NHL players participating at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Italy, Hockey Canada has made the decision to not use Canadian-born players that played in the NHL or were under NHL contract during the 2003-2004 season.

Canada’s National Men’s Team upcoming schedule:

  • Loto Cup (Piestany, Slovakia – December 14-18, 2004)
  • Spengler Cup (Davos, SUI – December 26-31, 2004)
