In a hard hitting contest in the first meeting between the Camrose Kodiaks and the host team Charlottetown Abbies, the Abbies came up with the victory in the third game of the 2003 Royal Bank Cup with a score of 3-2.

In Camrose’s first game of the tournament they exchanged hard hits with Charlottetown while taking a game misconduct, several visor infractions, a kneeing penalty, holding and roughing penalties and cross checking with one being to the head of Abbies’ Rob Chapman sending him to the Abbies’ dressing room after being helped to the bench by his teammates.

Even the coaches, Boris Rybalka (Camrose) and Jeff Squires (Abbies) exchanged words across the benches.

"Coaches are competitive people as well and I thought at times that there team was taking liberties with our players and I wanted to let them know that I wasn’t happy with that," said Squires of the conversation between the benches.

However, Squires chalked the intensive play from both teams up to playing at a national tournament.

"Emotions are high and when players start battling in the corners sticks and bodies start getting high and that’s what you had this evening on behalf of both teams," said Squires.

Goaltending was the other story to the game at the Charlottetown Civic Centre as both goaltenders performed well.

However, Cory Roberts, goaltender for the Abbies, was one of the best players on the ice.

"Cory Roberts is a great goaltender. And unfortunately last night we came out on the losing end and you saw what type of goaltender he is this evening and I give full credit to Cory Roberts and that’s all about competitiveness and he did a tremendous job for us," said Squires.

The Abbies improved over their first game play, when they lost their first game against the Lennoxville Cougars in the second over time on the May 3 by getting the first two goals of the game.

"I just can’t say enough about the character of our hockey team this evening. Losing in double overtime last night was very disheartening. I think it was just a character win here tonight," said Squires.

The only goal of the first period scored by Francis Walker at 4:03 on a power play goal. Walker who had a hard snapshot from between the hash marks and the circle knocked it above the left shoulder of Camrose Kodiaks goaltender Mike Brodeur.

Walker scored another at 3:51 of the second period with his second power play goal of the game on the short right side of Brodeur on a two man advantage for the Abbies.

Camrose’s Darrell Stoddard brought his team with in one by beating Roberts on the glove side on a goal at 11:21 of the second. And then Camrose evened the game up when Justin Perry scored at 15:41 of the third period.

But the comeback was for not when the Abbies scored their third goal of the game coming form Clemont Arsenault at 16:41 and was assisted by Adam Wojcik.
