Bob Lowes Named Head Coach of Canada's National Under-18 Summer Team

CALGARY, ALBERTA - Hockey Canada, in conjunction with the Canadian Hockey League, announced on Friday that Bob Lowes, Head Coach of the WHL's Regina Pats will be the Head Coach of Canada's National Under-18 Summer Team for the Eight Nations Cup in Slovakia and the Czech Republic in August, 2003.

Lowes, 40, an NCCP Advanced 1 Level certified coach, has been the head coach of the WHL’s Regina Pats for the past two seasons, being named the WHL Coach of the Year in 2002. The two-time CHL Coach of the Year (1996, 2002) has been an assistant coach with the National Under-18 Program twice, in 2002 with the World Championship Team and at the 1993 Pacific Cup.

"I am thrilled about the opportunity to coach Canada's National Under-18 Team," said Lowes. "This summers' development camp and participation in the Eight Nations Tournament in Slovakia and the Czech Republic will be an important step in identifying and preparing players for future events such the World Under-18 Championship next spring and the World Junior Championship."

Hockey Canada and the CHL also announced the appointment of Lowes' assistant coaches with the 2002 National Under-18 Team: Dave Cameron, head coach of the OHL's Toronto St. Michael’s Majors and Pascal Vincent, head coach of the QMJHL's Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

The appointments were announced following a thorough screening process carried out by the National Junior Team Policy Committee, which is made up of Dave Branch, president of the Canadian Hockey League and Commissioner of the OHL, Gilles Courteau, the QMJHL Commissioner and WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. Hockey Canada was represented by Bob Nicholson, President, Ken Corbett, a vice-chair at large on the Hockey Canada Board and Denis Hainault, Director, High Performance.

Canada will participate in two major international Under-18 events in 2003-2004. Lowes, Cameron and Vincent have been named to coach the National Under-18 Summer Team, which participates in the Eight Nations Cup in August.

Canada will play in its second IIHF World Under-18 Championship in April, 2004 along with 9 other countries. Canada won its first ever Under-18 gold medal at the 2003 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Russia. The coaching staff for the 2004 World Under-18 Team has not been named.

Cameron, 44, an NCCP Intermediate level certified coach, has been with the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors for three seasons, as Director of Hockey Operations and Head Coach. The native of Kinkora, PEI has led the Majors to the Eastern Conference Finals for three consecutive seasons and has already established himself as the winningest coach in the franchise’s modern era history, with 107 wins.

Vincent, 31, an NCCP Avanced I level certified coach, has been the head coach and General Manager of Cape Breton since 1999. The native of Laval, QC was an assistant coach under Mike Kelly with the National Under-18 Team which captured a gold medal at the 2003 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in April, 2003 in Russia.

Canada has participated in an August Under-18 Tournament in Europe since 1997, capturing gold at all six events. The coaching staff led by Lowes, will guide the team through a Development Camp from August 1-8. 2003 in Calgary, AB and the Eight Nations Cup in Slovakia/Czech Republic, from August 11-18, 2003.

Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League also announced three members of the support staff:

- Serge Leblanc Moncton Wildcats (LHJMQ) Equipment Manager

- Mikki Lanuk Kamloops Blazers (WHL) Therapist

- Dr. Ian Auld Calgary Hitmen (WHL) Team Doctor

In the next week to ten days, Hockey Canada and the CHL, along with Hockey Canada’s Head Scout Blair Mackasey will name the list of players invited to the National Under-18 Development Camp. Details for the National Under-18 Team's Development Camp in August will also be announced soon.

The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is designed to prepare coaches from communities to national teams to develop athletic potential. The three coaches selected are examples of individuals who have dedicated time in their coaching development to Coach Certification, leveraging their knowledge to work with Canada's National Teams at an international level.
