Halifax, Nova Scotia - The World Junior Community Events Program in conjunction with Hockey Nova Scotia and the Canadian Hockey Association is presenting the World Junior Minor Hockey Skills Challenge in concurrence with the 2003 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. This program is being promoted to minor hockey associations in Cape Breton and in the Halifax area.
Bill Schipilow, Chair of this program said. "Ten minor hockey associations in Cape Breton and nine minor hockey associations in the Halifax Regional Municipality are being given the opportunity to have some of their teams take part in a World Junior Minor Hockey Skills Challenge."
Competitive boy’s and girl’s hockey teams at the Atom, Pee Wee and Bantam levels and recreational hockey teams in those divisions will participate. Winners of the competition will be announced during the week of December 9,2002.
All minor hockey teams will use the same set of eight drills developed by the Canadian Hockey Association (CHA). All of the 19 minor hockey associations have been provided evaluation forms and drill diagrams to distribute to its teams. The Challenge includes passing, agility with and without pucks, skating, and speed skills.
A team can complete the World Junior Minor Hockey Skills Challenge during one of its on-ice practice sessions. When a team completes the Skills Challenge and the evaluation form is filled out, the team’s coach will be able to pick the winning player for the team. The evaluation forms are faxed to the World Junior Community Events Program Committee. Data collected form the skill challenge will be analyzed and evaluated by the CHA.
The winning player on each of the teams taking part in the Skills Challenge will receive a World Junior T-shirt, and two passes to Fan Fest. In addition, each individual team winner in the Cape Breton region will receive two tickets to the December 20th pre-tournament game between Canada and Slovakia. Each individual team winner in the Halifax area will receive two tickets to the pre-tournament game between the Canadian Junior squad and the University All-Stars to be played December 15 at the Halifax Metro Centre.
