Day two is now in the books at the 2002 Royal Bank Cup. Two hard-hitting games were played today at the Halifax Forum and the host team from Halifax currently sits atop the standings with two wins.

In game one, the Ottawa Junior Senators came from behind to defeat the Rayside Balfour Sabrecats 4-3. Alex Goupil scored two for the Junior Senators, pacing them to victory while Luc Bergeron made 36 saves to record the win. Rob Dmytruk had two assists in a losing cause for the Sabrecats. Goupil was named player-of-the-game for Ottawa with Jason Michelutti receiving the award for Rayside Balfour.

Game two was a carbon copy of the championship opener, with the Halifax Oland Exports pulling out a 4-3 overtime win over the OCN Blizzard. The Exports were down 3-0 just over ten minutes into the game but came out flying in the second, scoring early to close the gap to 3-1. They would add another in the second period and then tied the game at three early in the third, setting the stage for overtime. In the extra frame, Export captain Matt Quinn grabbed a loose puck and drilled home the game-winner at the 5:25 mark. Scott Gouthro, who replaced Andrew Sim after the third OCN goal made 24 saves for the win and was named player-of-the-game for Halifax. Andy Coates took the honours for the Blizzard.

Day three of the 2002 Royal Bank Cup begins tomorrow with the Chilliwack Chiefs facing off against the Rayside Balfour Sabrecats at 2:00 pm. Monday’s feature game will have the Ottawa Junior Senators hosting the OCN Blizzard at 7:00 pm. All games are being played at the Halifax Forum.
