CALGARY, AB - Wayne Gretzky, Executive Director of Canada's Men's Olympic Hockey team, announced Monday that Ed Belfour will be the third goalie at the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

Gretzky spoke with Belfour on Monday to inform him of the decision.

"After our meetings with the coaching staff during the NHL All-Star this past weekend, we have said all along that we would clarify our goaltending situation prior to traveling to Salt Lake City," said Gretzky. "It is not that Ed isn't deserving of being there as our number 1 or 2 goalie, but we are fortunate to have three great goaltenders on Team Canada and that we wanted to clarify our goaltending situation."

Belfour told Gretzky: "I'm prepared to do whatever it takes for our team to win a gold medal, and I will ensure that I prepare myself mentally in case of injury or if I am called upon."

Gretzky, along with Assistant Executive Director Kevin Lowe, Head Coach Pat Quinn and the coaching staff, announced Canada's 23 player roster on December 15th – which included three goaltenders: Ed Belfour, Martin Brodeur and Curtis Joseph.

Canada's first game at the 2002 Winter Olympics will be on February 15th versus Sweden.
