Camrose and Flin Flon to Face Off for 2001 Royal Bank Cup

FLIN FLON, MB – The Camrose Kodiaks (Pacific Region) and the Flin Flon Bombers (Host) will meet in Sunday’s Royal Bank Cup championship game. The Championship game will be played at the Whitney Forum in Flin Flon, MB at 3 pm (Central Time), 4 pm (Eastern time) and will be broadcast live across the country on TSN and RDS.

In Saturday’s first semi-final, the Camrose Kodiaks (Pacific Region) defeated Les Panthères de St-Jérôme (Eastern Region) 7-1. The Kodiaks were led by forward Brad Wanchulak, who scored two goals for the Pacific region and also added two assists. Scott Galenza, who was named top goaltender of the tournament, turned away 30 shots for the win. The Kodiaks finished the round robin portion of the tournament in first place with a perfect 4-0 record, outscoring their opponents 17-8.

The hometown Flin Flon Bombers defeated their SJHL rivals, the Weyburn Red Wings (Western Region) 4-0 in Saturday’s second semi-final. Chris Shaffer led the way for the Bombers, scoring a goal and adding an assist. SJHL All-Star goaltender Morgan Cey stopped all 38 shots he faced to pick up the shutout. The Bombers finished the round robin portion of the tournament in third place with a 2-2 record.

Last night, the 2001 Royal Bank Cup Awards Committee announced the individual award winners for the tournament. Award winners were as follows:

Most Valuable Player – Darrell Stoddard (Camrose Kodiaks)
Most Sportsmanlike Player – Mark Debusschere (Flin Flon Bombers)
Top Forward – Jason Vermeulen (Weyburn Red Wings)
Top Defenseman – James Laux (Weyburn Red Wings)
Top Goaltender – Scott Galenza (Camrose Kodiaks)
Top Scorer – Darrell Stoddard (Camrose Kodiaks)
Royal Bank $5000 Scholarship – Mathieu Shank (Sudbury Wolves)

Also last night, the Royal Bank Financial Group handed out $1000 scholarships to one player representing each Junior "A" league in Canada. The winners were as follows:

Mathieu Shank – Sudbury Wolves (Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League)
Dustin J. Sproat– Drayton Valley Thunder (Alberta Junior Hockey League)
Nevin Giesbrecht – Selkirk Steelers (Manitoba Junior Hockey League)
Brett Lemmon– Oshawa Legionaires (Ontario Provincial AAA Junior Hockey League)
Michael VanDenBosch – La Ronge Ice Wolves (Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League)
Jeff Ellis – Charlottetown Abbies (Maritime Junior A Hockey League)
Kevin Peloquin – College Francais de Longueill (Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Quebec)
Simon Robert Jones – Quesnel Millionaires (British Columbia Junior Hockey League)
Francois Jolette – Nepean Raiders (Central Junior A Hockey League)
