SUMMERSIDE, PEI - Dana Pretty's first goal of the tournament proved to the deciding goal as Team Alberta won the 2001 Esso Women's National Hockey Championship. Pretty beat Team Quebec goaltender Kim St. Pierre at 14:58 of the second period, providing Team Alberta with a 1-0 victory.

Pretty, a native of Richmond, B.C., picked up a loose puck along the boards and quickly beat St. Pierre high to the glove side. St. Pierre, named the tournament's top goaltender, only allowed the one goal despite facing a total of 36 shots.

Her Alberta counterpart, Robin Rittmaster, made 23 saves for the shutout.

With the victory, Alberta picks up a 19th medal at the Championship in the 20-year existence of the tournament (Six Gold, Eight Silver and Five Bronze).

Earlier on Sunday, Team Ontario defeated Team British Columbia 8-0 to capture the Maureen McTeer Cup (Bronze medal). After a scoreless first period, Ontario's potent offence stepped up, taking a 2-0 lead into the third period. National Women's Team member Geraldine Heaney put the game out of reach with a powerplay marker early into the final frame. Scoring for Ontario were Cheryl Pounder (2), Sommer West (2), Amanda Benoit-Wark, Cheryl Muranko, Gillian Apps and Heaney. Jennifer Dewar made 19 saves for the shutout.

Ontario has now medalled in 19 of the 20 National Championships (Seven Gold, Five Silver and Seven Bronze).
