Russia Defeats National Team 3-1 in First Game of Baltic Cup

MOSCOW, RUSSIA -- The Russian National Men's Team defeated Team Canada 3-1 on Tuesday in the first game of the Baltic Cup Tournament. The tournament runs through to December 20.

Scoring the lone goal for Team Canada was Jeremy Adduono of Thunder Bay, ON, assisted by Chris Szysky of White City, SK and Bob Maudie of Cranbrook, BC. Adduono was also named player of the game. Canada also had a disallowed goal at the end of the first period.

The Russians outshot Canada 38-24, scoring off a face off in the second period and then an empty net goal at 59:20 of the third period.

"We have been playing well here, but unfortunately, have had a bad stroke of luck with injuries," said Mike Johnston, Team Canadaís General Manager and Head Coach. Casson Masters had to leave the game in the first period after dislocating his shoulder and Troy Stonier suffered a broken leg in a game on Sunday against the Czech Republic. Yves Racine and Martin Bergeron, both currently playing in the Finnish Elite league have joined Team Canada for the tournament.

The first game of the Baltic Cup Tournament brought in a crowd of 7,800 fans. The tournament is being held at the Luzhniki Arena, site of the famous 1972 Canada-Russia series.

The other game in the tournament had Sweden beating Finland by the score of 3-2.

Team Canada will play Sweden Wednesday, December 16, the Czech Republic on Friday, December 18 and conclude the tournament on Sunday, December 20 playing Finland. From there, Canada will travel to Davos, Switzerland to participate in the Spengler Cup, December 27-31, 1998.
