CHA Hires Vernon Doyle of PEI As Manager, Officiating
October 2, 1998

CALGARY, AB -- Vernon Doyle of Charlottetown, PEI has been hired as the Canadian Hockey Association's Manager, Officiating, Johnny Misley, the CHA's Director of Development, announced Friday.

For the last year, Doyle has been the Executive-Director of the Prince Edward Island Hockey Association, responsible for the planning, organization and administration of amateur hockey in PEI. From 1994-97, Doyle was Referee-in-Chief of the PEIHA, a volunteer position, the culmination of 15 years as an on-ice official.

"I see this position as an opportunity to grow and to continue to enhance my hockey knowledge," said Doyle. "The CHA's development programs are the No. 1 priority, without a doubt, and to be a part of it is a marvellous challenge. I'm really looking forward to jumping in and getting to work a the task at hand."

Doyle has wide-ranging knowledge of the CHA and brings a strong mix of administrative experience as well as on-ice work as an official to the job. Doyle, who holds his Level V certification through the Canadian Hockey Officiating Program, has officiated many provincial championships, including the regional Air Canada Cup midget, the Irving Oil Cup bantam and the Hostess Cup pee-wee championships.

He has worked as a supervisor at numerous championships, as well, including the Esso Women's National Championship and the national female midget championship. He contributed substantially to the completion of the Off-Ice Officials Manual published in 1996 by the CHA.

Doyle replaces Dave Baker, the CHA's Manager, Officiating for the past four years, who has moved on to work for the National Hockey League. As the NHL officiating department's Technical Manager, Baker will be responsible for printed material such as casebooks and rulebooks, as well as supervision of the league's referee trainees and recruitment. Baker will also represent the NHL officiating department at referee schools and camps.

"We wish Dave Baker well as he moves on to the NHL," said Misley. "It's a tribute to Dave that the NHL recognizes how much he has to offer. It's also a tribute to the programs that he has administered so capably the past four years.

"It is in no small part thanks to a consummate hockey administrator like Baker that we are fortunate enough to have someone the calibre of Vernon Doyle ready to step in and assume the mandate of managing our officiating programs."
