CALGARY -- Goaltender Danielle Dube of Vancouver, BC, was released Tuesday by the Canadian Women's Olympic Hockey Team, head coach Shannon Miller announced.

The release of Dube, 21, reduced the Women's Olympic Team roster to 24 players, including two goalies -- Lesley Reddon of Fredericton, NB, and Manon Rhéaume of Charlesbourg, QC, both of whom are two-time Women's World Champions.

Reddon backstopped Canada to their fourth straight Women's World Hockey Championship last April 6 in Kitchener, ON and played for Canada on the 1994 championship team. Rhéaume helped Canada win the Women's World Championship in 19, but did not make the roster for the 1997 championship. Dube played for Canada at the inaugural 3 Nations' Cup tournament in December 1996 and shared goaltending duties with Reddon at the 1997 Women's World Championship.

"We have been in a fortunate situation having three talented goalies who can compete at the top international level," said Miller. "For the past three years these three goalies have been jockeying for position and this time, for this event (Winter Olympics), Dube has been ranked third among this elite group of Canadian female goalies."

In early December, Miller will pare the Canadian roster down to the Olympic Games limit of 20 players in early December. The final roster for the first-ever Women's Hockey Tournament at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan next February will announced Dec. 9.

In making the announcement on Dube, Miller said: "We have had three months to evaluate the goaltending situation on our Olympic team and the coaching staff has concluded that Reddon and Rhéaume rank ahead of Dube. As we head into December, with the Olympics just two months away, it was time to get down to two goalies, so they can see more action."

The Women's Olympic Team will train at its Calgary home base at Father David Bauer Arena for the next two weeks, before departing for a 'home and home' series against the United States. The two rivals will meet in Minneapolis on Dec. 4 and again in Winnipeg on Dec. 6. Both teams will compete in the 3 Nations Cup tournament, along with Finland, from Dec. 12-20 in Lake Placid, NY and other centres, including Belleville, ON and Ottawa. So far in pre-Olympic play, Team Canada has fashioned a 13-2 won-lost record, their only losses coming against Team USA.
