Five National Team Members Sign One-Year Pro Deals

CALGARY, AB -- Dean Evason, team captain of Canada's 1996-97 National Team and of the gold medal-winning World Hockey Championship club, has signed a one-year deal to play for Landshut in the German Elite League, Canadian Hockey announced Wednesday.

Evason and fellow national team member Steve Junker, both forwards, are headed for Landshut, which is coached by Wayne Fleming, a former assistant coach with Canada's National Team under Dave King.

Forward George Zajankala has signed a one-year deal with Koln, another club team in Germany, which is coached by Kevin Primeau, formerly an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League.

Forward Jason Young has signed a one-year deal with Thurgau of the Swiss Elite League, while defenceman Kayle Short has signed with the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League.

Evason, a 12-year NHL veteran with the Hartford Whalers and Calgary Flames, was the leading scorer for the National Team last year, with 25 goals and 46 assists in 71 games, while Young had 26 goals and 32 assists for 58 points.

In 52 games with the National Team, Zajankala had 22 goals and 21 assists for 43 points. Junker had 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points. Short had seven goals and six assists for 13 points in 59 games.
