OTTAWA - Canada's hockey tradition on ice continued on the floor as Team Canada brought home a silver medal from the inaugural International Ice Hockey Federation World In-Line Hockey Championship held in Minneapolis, Minnesota last week. The United States won the gold medal with a 13-5 win over Canada in the championship game on Saturday night.

Canada advanced to the gold medal game with a hard fought 6-5 win over Finland in the semi-finals. Finland defeated Germany to take the bronze medal.

Canada trailed the Americans 6-1 at half time and was out shot 63-38 overall. Former Ottawa 67s (Ontario Hockey League) star Brett Seguin of St. Mary's, Ont., led Canada with two goals and one assist, while team captain Ken House of Toronto figured in all five goals with one goal and four assists. Dan Price of Sarnia, Ont. added two goals.

"I am very proud of the way this team came together over a very short period of time and was able to compete at an elite, international level," said head coach Dave Easter of Chatham, Ont. "In the end, the Americans' experience with this new sport was the determining factor."

"The success we achieved at this event bodes very well for Canada's future in this new and growing sport," added Murray Costello, president of Canadian Hockey. "Despite our short preparation time and our relative lack of experience in this sport, we delivered a message that Canada will be as much a force in in-line Hockey as we have been in ice hockey."

Canada cruised through the round robin with 23-1, 17-2 and 12-3 wins over Australia, Austria and Russia respectively, along with an 8-8 tie with Finland. House led all scorers at the six-game event with 14 goals and 10 assists, followed by Jay Moore of the U.S. with 10 goals and 13 assists.

"We are pleased with the way the players carried themselves both on and off the floor," said Mark Bandrauk, team manager and Canadian Hockey's manager, in-line hockey. "With the head start the Americans had in the sport, it was very satisfying to win the silver medal. This is a very positive start for in-line hockey both on the international scene and domestically in Canada."
