CALGARY - Canadian Hockey announced today that Team Canada's general manager and head coach, Glen Sather, has added Colorado Avalanche defenceman Adam Foote to the line-up for the up-coming World Cup of Hockey.

Foote, a five-year veteran of the National Hockey League, replaces Boston Bruin defenceman Ray Bourque.

"Adam proved in the Stanley Cup playoffs that he has stepped up to the elite level and we feel that his style will be perfect for international hockey," said Glen Sather. "There is no doubt that he has the skating ability and hockey sense to play at this level."

On the absence of Bourque in the line-up, Sather noted that he will be missed. "We respect his decision not to take part in the World Cup of Hockey and we will miss the leadership qualities that he would have brought to the squad," added Sather, "but we have a great depth in our talent pool that will pick up the slack."

Foote, 25, played a key role in the Avalanche's 1996 Stanley Cup victory, playing in 22 post-season games and recording a +11 plus/minus rating. He has played in total of 280 regular season games, 73 of those during the 1995-96 season, recording a career total of 13 goals and 41 assists for 54 points.

The native of Toronto has been with the Colorado/Quebec franchise since his first pro season in 1991-92. Foote was Quebec's second choice, 22nd overall, in the 1989 Entry Draft.

Foote played three seasons (1988--91) with the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, and was named to the 1991 OHL first all-star team.

Team Canada's training camp will be held in Whistler, B.C., from August 14-19. Players arrive on Wednesday, August 14 and step on the ice for their first practice at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, August 15 at the Meadow Park Sports Centre. Daily two-hour 9:30 a.m. practices will tentatively take place every day through to Sunday, August 18.
