EDGE SCHOOL ADVANCES TO GOLD MEDAL GAME WITH 6-4 WIN OVER PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE
by Amanda Trunzo
WINNIPEG, Man. – The Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy faced off against Edge School for Athletes in semifinal action Saturday, with the latter team gaining the “edge” for a 6-4 win over POE, and a spot in the first-ever Female World Sport School Challenge.
About 75 parents, siblings and friends came to the Winnipeg Free Press Rink at the Iceplex to cheer on the two skilled teams in what was a competitive, fast-paced game that certainly kept the crowd entertained.
It was clear that these two teams are closely matched right from the first puck drop. It wasn’t until 8:56 into the game that Morgan Sakundiak (Cochrane, Alta.) scored the first goal for POE, with an assist from Emma Hare (Nelson, B.C.).
The Edge, not to be discouraged easily, answered just over five minutes later, when defenceman Danielle Bishoff (Cochrane, Alta.) took a beautiful shot from the blue line on an assist from Cassidy Fuller (Cochrane, Alta.), to even it out at one-apiece going into intermission.
In an amazing game of performance and skill, both teams fought hard to bring out a victory. But the competitive spirit resulted in many players spending time in the penalty box, rather than on the ice.
Nevertheless, this did not stop either team from its offensive prowess. The Edge scored back-to-back goals within the first three minutes of the second period, the first by Alex Serpico (Calgary, Alta.) and the next from Andie Boeckman (Cochrane, Alta.). Boeckman went on to notch another for the Edge in the middle frame, along with Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alta.).
The back-and-forth action continued throughout the second, with Lauren Spring (Kelowna, B.C.) and Halli Krzyzaniak (Neepawa, Man.) answering for the Pursuit of Excellence to make it 5-3 after 40 minutes.
As clock ticked down on the game, loud cheers could be heard for both teams from their supporters.
But the third period had barely started when Eden Murray (Medicine Hat, Alta.) scored the sixth and final goal for the Edge just 41 seconds into the frame. The Pursuit of Excellence fought hard for a comeback, with Spring scoring her second of the game at the 4:44 mark.
But there just wasn’t enough time left for the Pursuit to complete a comeback, and the Edge skated away with the 6-4 win and a spot in Sunday’s gold medal game at the 2013 Female World Sport School Challenge in Winnipeg, Man. The puck drops at 1:30 p.m. CT in the Winnipeg Free Press Rink.
The Pursuit of Excellence will play Shaftesbury Hockey Academy for bronze medal bragging rights at 10:15 a.m. CT, also in the Winnipeg Free Press Rink.
