St. Mary's Academy 5 - Fort Frances High School 0

HOST TEAM ST. MARY’S SHUTS OUT FORT FRANCES TO KICK OFF FIRST-EVER FEMALE WORLD SPORT SCHOOL CHALLENGE

by Meg Crane

WINNIPEG, Man. – The first game of the first-ever Female World Sports School Challenge saw host team St. Mary’s Academy blanking Fort Frances High School from Thursday morning at the Iceplex, with a 5-0 final score and netminder Anna Kulas (Winnipeg, Man.) snagging the shutout.

The Fort Frances Muskies racked up most of the games penalties, giving the St. Mary’s Academy Flames the chance to capitalize on two power plays during the second period.

St. Mary’s played strong offensively, keeping the puck in the Fort Frances zone for long period of team, but goaltender Kate Parsons (Fort Frances, Ont.) was on top of the puck, staying calm and collected between the posts despite the pressure.  She faced 34 shots through three periods of play, including 20 in the middle frame alone.

After a bit of a slow start in the first period, Riann Richot (Winnipeg, Man.) scored the tournament opener at the 14:17 in the first to make it 1-0 going into intermission.

Early in the second, St. Mary’s got its first chance on the man advantage, with Christian Higham (Winnipeg, Man.) passing the puck to Danielle Krzyszczyk (Winnipeg, Man.), to make it 2-0.

Fort Frances continued to be left shorthanded throughout much of the middle frame, which allowed St. Mary’s to sneak in two more goals, including another from Richot and one from Tess Bracken (Winnipeg, Man.) in the last minute of the period to make it 4-0 after 40 minutes. The 100 people or so in the crowd excitedly cheered and counted the teams out of the second period.

The third period got off to another slow start, with both teams receiving a penalty. But with just over a minute left before the final buzzer, Saige Patrick (Winnipeg, Man.) shot the puck into the net for the St Mary’s final goal of the game, capping off the 5-0 shutout victory.

Player of the game honours were awarded to Richot for St. Mary’s and Shelby Tymkin (Fort Frances, Ont.) for Fort Frances High School.

The St. Mary’s Flames play again Thursday evening at 7 p.m., while the Fort Frances Muskies get to rest up until tomorrow morning’s game at 9:45 a.m.
