SAGUENAY, Que. – Samantha Sutherland (Cochrane, Alta.) scored once and added an assist and Robyn Chemago (Slave Lake, Alta.) made 13 saves for the shutout as Alberta took seventh place at the 2011 National Women’s Under-18 Championship with a 3-0 win over Saskatchewan on Saturday morning.

A goal in the first period and two more in the third were enough to give Alberta its first win of the tournament thanks to a stifling defence that allowed Saskatchewan only six shots in the final 40 minutes.

Alberta scored the only goal of the first period when Kelly Murray (Medicine Hat, Alb.) buried a rebound off a Heather Berzins (Calgary, Alb.) shot to open the scoring. Saskatchewan outshot Alberta 7-5 in the first, but Chemago stood tall to keep Alberta ahead.

Both teams had great scoring chances during the second period, but the two goaltenders, Chemago and Saskatchewan’s Jane Kish (Weyburn, Sask.) came up big and made key saves.

Hannah Mousek (Olds, Alta.) doubled Alberta’s lead midway through the third period before Sutherland’s empty-netter with 66 seconds to go rounded out the scoring and iced the victory.

It’s the third time in four tournaments Alberta has finished seventh, along with 2007 and 2009; it finished fifth in 2008 in Napanee, Ont. Saskatchewan finished eighth for the third time since 2005.
