ROTHESAY ADVANCES TO GOLD MEDAL GAME AFTER WIN OVER BANFF

CALGARY, Alta. – Mitch Byrne scored one goal and two assists, while Jordan Boyd and Chase Bell added a goal and an assist apiece as Rothesay Netherwood School used a five-goal third period to advance to the Varsity Division gold medal game, as they defeated the Banff Hockey Academy, 7-2 in the World Sport School Challenge semifinals on Tuesday.

Both goaltenders stood on their head in the opening frame, as Michael Lenko stopped all 13 shots fired his way, while Rothesay’s Zachary Moulton made 9 saves in a scoreless first period.

Anders Flotten opened the scoring 8:24 into the middle stanza with a power-play marker for Banff, who were outshot 18-3 in the frame. Banff’s lead was short-lived, as Devon Earle responded for Rothesay just 53 seconds later and Austin Beaton gave Rothesay the lead with 4:50 left in the frame, making it 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Banff started the third period on a power-play and made good of the opportunity, as Flotten netted his second of the game, making it 2-2 just 27 seconds into the frame. Rothesay took the game over the rest of the way, getting five unanswered goals from Adam Higdon, Mitchell Vanderlaan, Bell, Byrne and Boyd, making it 7-2.

Rothesay will meet the Okanagan Hockey Academy in the Varsity Division gold medal game on Wednesday (12:00 p.m. MT); Rothesay hammered Okanagan 7-1 on Day 3. Earlier in the day, Banff will square-off with Edge School – Gold in the bronze medal game (11:30 a.m. MT), Edge – Gold handed Banff an 8-2 loss on Day 1.
