2013 TELUS Cup

3 Stars of the Day

DAY 7 – SUNDAY, APRIL 28, 2013

1. Red Deer Chiefs offence
How do you pick just one? Five different players scored goals, 10 had at least a point and the offence overwhelmed Ottawa with 55 shots on goal, including 24 in the game-changing second period. Red Deer scored 33 times in seven games en route to its second national championship in as many years, becoming just the fourth team ever to win back-to-back gold medals.

2. Matt Zentner (G) – Red Deer
After watching last year’s final from the bench it was Zentner’s time to shine on Sunday, making 27 saves to record just the third gold medal game shutout in National Midget Championship history. He didn’t have to be spectacular and the offence did its part, but Zentner was there when called upon, particularly in the first period, when he made 12 saves, almost half of his stops for the entire game.

3. Simon Hofley (G) – Ottawa
Not many goaltenders can claim they had two games at Canada’s National Midget Championship with at least 50 saves, but Hofley turned in his second such performance on Sunday, turning aside 50 shots in Ottawa’s gold medal game loss to Red Deer. Hofley faced 225 shots in his six starts, more than any other goaltender, and finished with a save percentage of .933.

DAY 6 – SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2013

1. Chris Gerrie (F) – Red Deer
Gerrie couldn’t have picked a better time for his breakout performance of the 2013 TELUS Cup, scoring twice and adding two assists to lead Red Deer over Saskatoon and into the gold medal game. He was in on the Chiefs’ first four goals, doubling his point total from the previous five games and ensuring Red Deer would defend its gold medal on Sunday afternoon.

2. Matthew Hudson (F) – Ottawa
The 2013 TELUS Cup Most Valuable Player showed just why he took home the hardware in the Jr. 67’s semifinal win over Laval-Montréal, setting up Ryan Kuffner for the game’s opening goal late in the first period and adding the eventual game-winner just minutes later, helping Ottawa grab a lead it wouldn’t relinquish as it became the first Ottawa team to advance to the gold medal game since 1978.

3. Colton Bobyk (D) – Red Deer
Bobyk missed the end of the Chiefs’ run to the AMHL championship and their regional series against Vancouver NW after having his appendix removed, but hasn’t missed a beat since returning to the line-up, leading all defenceman in scoring at the TELUS Cup with seven points, including a goal and an assist in Red Deer’s semifinal win over Saskatoon that sent it to its second straight gold medal game.

DAY 5 – FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 2013

1. Simon Hofley (G) – Ottawa
The Ottawa Jr. 67’s are going to the semifinals at the TELUS Cup, and they have their netminder to thank. Hofley turned in his best performance of the tournament, and arguably the best by any goaltender thus far, making 55 saves to help Ottawa earn a 2-2 with Red Deer and earn the single point they needed. Named the tournament’s Top Goaltender, Hofley was at his best in the third period, making 21 saves.

2. Kolten Olynek (F) – Saskatoon
The semifinal scenario was simple for the Saskatoon Contacts – win and get in. Olynek made sure last year’s bronze medallists will be around for the weekend, scoring three times to finish with a tournament-leading seven goals in the preliminary round, and adding an assist as the Contacts scored the game’s first nine goals in a convincing win over the Valley Wildcats.

3. Julien Gauthier (F) – Laval-Montréal
Take your pick. Three Rousseau Royal skaters recorded at least four points, including five from Gauthier, and seven had multiple-point performances as Laval-Montréal silenced the home crowd early en route to locking up top spot in the preliminary round. Gauthier finished with three goals and two assists in the win over Sault Ste. Marie, finishing tied with teammate Massimo Carozza for the tournament scoring lead.

DAY 4 – THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 2013

1. Brian Kment (G) – Ottawa & Rylan Parenteau (G) – Saskatoon
After a tournament filled with offence – two games with a team scoring at least six goals, two games with seven and one with eight – it was the goaltenders’ turn in the spotlight on Thursday night, with Kment and Parenteau combining for 67 saves in a 1-1 tie between the North Stars and Contacts. Kment made 32 saves while Parenteau answered with 35 in the draw.

2. Jody Sick (F) – Red Deer
Sick was all over the scoresheet early on in the Chiefs’ 8-1 rout of Valley, scoring twice in the first period to give his team a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. He also added an assist on tournament scoring leader Jacob Schofield’s goal early in the second as Red Deer scored the game’s final seven goals to remain in prime position for a semifinal spot and keep alive its dream of defending its gold medal.

3. Marc-Antoine Germain (F) – Laval-Montréal
Germain was the hero for the Rousseau Royal on Thursday, scoring twice – including the game-winner midway through the third period – to help the Quebec champions erase a 3-2 third-period deficit and win their third in a row, 4-3 over Ottawa. Germain converted a breakaway with 9:26 to go, going to the backhand and beating Michael Cullen to all but lock up a semifinal spot for Laval-Montréal.

DAY 3 – WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 2013

1. Matthew Hudson (F) – Ottawa
The Jr. 67’s captain put his team on his back Wednesday, scoring three times and adding an assist to help Ottawa hand host Sault Ste. Marie its first loss of the tournament. Hudson scored once in the first period, once in the second and once in the third, and help set up Ryan Kuffner’s insurance marker early in the final frame as the Jr. 67’s moved into a three-way tie for first place.

2. Massimo Carozza (F) – Laval-Montréal
Carozza played the role of place-kicker on Wednesday afternoon, rounding out the scoring and converting the touchdown for Laval-Montréal in its second consecutive lopsided victory, this time over Valley. The Rousseau Royal forward scored once in each period and added an assist to help the Quebec champions become just the second team in 10 years to score at least seven goals in back-to-back games.

3. Kolten Olynek (F) – Saskatoon
The Contacts entire top line – Olynek, Vukie Mpofu and Rodney Southam – did the damage on Wednesday, combining to score all five of Saskatoon’s goals, but it was Olynek who came up big when it mattered, scoring the tying goal and setting up Mpofu for the go-ahead marker as the Contacts fought back from an early 2-0 hole, then adding a goal and an assist late when the West Region champions erased a 5-3 deficit to earn a tie.

DAY 2 – TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 2013

1. Brian Kment (G) – Sault Ste. Marie
After watching brother Jacob get the start and the win in the North Stars’ tournament-opening win on Monday, it was big brother Brian’s turn on Tuesday and he came up with the performance of a lifetime, making 47 saves to lead the hosts over the defending national champions and in to first place. He got help from his posts late, but as the old saying goes: you’ve got to be good to be lucky, and lucky to be good.

2. Medric Mercier (F) – Ottawa
Playing in front of what could be his future hometown fans (he’s a Soo Greyhounds draft pick), Mercier put on an offensive show in Ottawa’s win over Valley, scoring twice on the power play to get the Jr. 67’s on the board and on their way to the first victory by a team from the nation’s capital at the national championship since Ottawa West beat Saint John 6-4 in 1983.

3. Julien Gauthier (F) – Laval-Montréal
He got help from Kevin Domingue, Joël Giguère, Massimo Carozza, Gaël-Mukéba Lubwele and Sacha Guay, all of whom had multi-point games, but Gauthier was the offensive leader for the Rousseau Royal on Tuesday, scoring once and adding three assists to get Laval-Montréal into the win column and avoid the first 0-2 start by a Quebec team at the national championship in 25 years.

DAY 1 – MONDAY, APRIL 22, 2013

1. Matt Pinder (F) – Sault Ste. Marie
There’s no better way to kick off the tournament in front of the home fans than with a win, and a hat trick. Pinder scored nine minutes into the first period, added the game-winning goal late in the opening frame and completed his hat trick in the third to lead the North Stars to a tournament-opening win. Pinder scored as many goals Monday as the entire Sault Ste. Marie team did in its last trip to the TELUS Cup, in 2007.

2. Jesse Shynkaruk (F) – Saskatoon
Shynkaruk didn’t waste any time putting his name on the scoresheet in the tournament opener, scoring twice before the game was five minutes old and helping the Contacts to a win over Ottawa. A 22-goal scorer in the regular season who added four in 15 playoff games, Monday was the first multi-goal game for Shynkaruk since Feb. 7, when he tallied twice in a win over Regina.

3. Jacob Schofield (F) – Red Deer
Schofield was in on both halves of the Chiefs’ quick start in their opening game, setting up first-period goals by linemates Jody Sick and Ryker Leer to spark Red Deer to an early lead. The Yellowknife, N.W.T., native got in on the offence himself, rounding out the scoring in the third period to ensure the Chiefs opened defense of their gold medal with a victory.
