2009 National Midget Championship

Rousseau Sports de Laval-Bourassa  5 -  Winnipeg Thrashers  2

SELKIRK, Man. – Make it 12 medals in a row for Quebec at the National Midget Championship.

Alexandre Lavoie scored twice, while Kevin Fiset, Antony Courcelles and Thomas Martin each added one as the Rousseau Sports de Laval-Bourassa claimed the bronze medal with a 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Thrashers on Sunday morning.

The Quebec Region champions have now won a medal at each of the last 12 national championships, including bronze the last five years. A Quebec team has not won gold since the Gouverneurs de Ste-Foy took home the top prize in 2001.

Playing their second game in 15 hours after losing 7-0 to the Calgary Buffaloes in Saturday’s late semifinal, the Thrashers struck first when Michael Hay converted on a power play just 4:24 in.

Lavoie pulled Laval-Bourassa back even late in the opening 20 minutes, and he and Fiset added second-period goals to give the Rousseau Sports all the offence they would need. Courcelles and Martin scored in the third period to cap off the Quebec champs’ second win of the tournament.

Cam Hildebrand rounded out the scoring late for the Thrashers, who failed in their attempt to win back-to-back medals – they claimed silver last year in Arnprior, Ont.

Simon Giroux made 43 saves to earn the victory for Laval-Bourassa, which won its first medal in two trips to the national championship.
