WOLVES TOP TITANS AS LATE OTTAWA VALLEY RALLY FALLS SHORT

What looked like a blowout after 40 minutes ended up as one of the best games of the opening day of the 2008 TELUS Cup, as the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves knocked off the Ottawa Valley Titans 6-4 on Monday night.

The served as a bit of revenge for Sudbury, who lost 5-3 to the Titans in the round robin at the Central Regional championship just two weeks ago.

The first period was the Mathieu Lecours show, as the Sudbury captain scored twice, including the game’s opening goal just 24 seconds after the game’s opening face-off, as the Wolves took a 2-0 lead midway through the opening frame.

Sebastien Goulet cut the lead in half for the Titans, batting the puck past Sudbury netminder Christopher McDougall with less than 90 seconds remaining in the first period, but the Wolves controlled the middle frame, scoring three times, including Lecours’ hat trick marker on a gorgeous individual effort.

Lecours’ third goal spelled the end of the night for Titans netminder Justin Gilbert, who was replaced by Alex Huard for the remainder of the game.

Huard was not greeted warmly by the Wolves, however, as Denis Restoule snapped the puck past the Belleville Bulls’ draft pick for a 5-1 Sudbury lead heading into the intermission.

Outshot 29-17 through the first two periods, Ottawa Valley came out like a different team in the third period, firing 14 shots at McDougall to just four for the Wolves.

Devin Cobbold got the Titans to within three at 7:34 with a goal similar to Goulet’s in the first period, and markers from Nathan Siydock and Devon Rice just two minutes apart had the Titans to within one in the dying minutes.

But the comeback was not to be, as Stefan Harrington converted on a Sudbury powerplay with less than four minutes on the clock to clinch the victory for the Wolves, the first win for a Central Region champion since the Toronto Jr. Canadiens topped the Chateauguay Patriotes 5-1 in the round robin at the 2005 TELUS Cup, a span of ten games.

Lecours – who finished with four points – picked up player of the game honours for Sudbury, while fellow captain Liam Burtt won the award for Ottawa Valley.

The Wolves face another stiff test on Tuesday when they face the Calgary Buffaloes at 4:00 p.m. ET, while the Titans return to their home ice at the Nick Smith Centre at 7:30 p.m. ET when they face the Cole Harbour McCains
