Round Robin

In a matchup of two early tournament favourites,  the Levis Commandeurs (1-0) took on the Saskatoon Contacts (1-0).  Both teams played without key players who were injured in their opening games; Saskatoon’s Scott Brownlee and Levis’ Cedrick Paradis-Beaudoin.  The Quebec represntatives got off to a fast start when Phillipe Garnier drilled home a high slapshot from the slot 41 seconds into the game.  Levis quickly added to their lead when Olivier Painchaud writsted home a rebound 84 seconds later, chasing Contacts starter Travis Yonkman from the net in favour of Justin Leclerc.  The Contacts responded with sustained physical play, and were rewarded with a shorthanded goal at 9:01 on a nice feed from Patrick Cey to Dustin Cameron, bringing the score to 2-1.  The rest of the period was fast paced and phyical with both team trading powerplay opportunities, and the teams headed to the dressing room with the score 2-1 Commandeurs.

The Contacts started the second period strong, and carried the play for the openinig five minutes both even strength and shorthanded.  Levis started to mount some pressure of their own, gaining momentum from their powerplay opportunities, and Commandeur goaltender Vincent Vanesse continued his solid work in net.  The Contacts effort was rewarded as Kyle Bortis converted a beautiful give and go on a two-on-one with Cody Danberg to tie the score at 2-2 with 1:38 left in the second period.

Saskatoon continued to control the game, generating numerous chances around Vanesse in the first six minutes of the third.  Their pressure finally led to another goal when Nick Kalnicki tipped home a great feed from the point from Derek Hulak at the 10 minute mark to put team West up 3-2.  Levis clawed their way back into the game, with Jean-Philip Chabot making a great backhand, cross ice pass to Francios Gauthier who was in alone and beat Leclerc blocker side to tie the score with 1:46 left in regulation.  With the Commaneurs’ Pier-Alexandre Poulin in the box for elbowing after the tying goal, the Contacts generated some great chances, but were unable to put home the winner before time ran out.

The overtime period was played at a frantic pace as both teams went for their second win of the tournament.  Both goalies made great save after great save as the teams traded chances during the wide open play.  The Contacts got a power play opportunity in OT and peppered Vanesse, but couldn’t solve him.  The Commandeurs were hemmed in their own end for the last 4 minutes, but Vanesse turned away wave after wave of shots to preserve the tie and earn himself his teams’ Player of the Game award.  After their slow start, the Contacts outshot Levis 41-23 in the game.  Saskatoon’s player of the game was stand-out defenseman Eric Gryba.
