DAOUST SCORES A PAIR AS CANADA BEATS RUSSIA 8-3 TO WIN GOLD AT 2013 MECO CUP

FÜSSEN, Germany – Mélodie Daoust (Valleyfield, Que./McGill University, CIS) scored two goals to lead Canada to an 8-3 victory over Russia in the gold medal final of the 2013 Meco Cup women's hockey tournament at the Füssen Arena on Sunday.

Sarah Edney (Mississauga, Ont./Harvard University, ECAC), Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC), Brigette Lacquette (Waterhen, Man./University of Minnesota Duluth, WCHA), Carolyne Prévost (Sarnia, Ont./Montreal, CWHL), Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont./Clarkson University, ECAC) and Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont./Dartmouth University, ECAC) had the other goals as Canada's National Women’s Under-22/Development Team won its third gold medal in four years at the Meco Cup, formerly the MLP Cup and Air Canada Cup. Edney and Prévost both scored empty-net goals late in the third.

“It was a very mature team,” head coach Pierre Alain said.  “They handled everything perfectly. The group was very good and team-building was very good.”

Tatiana Burina scored twice for Russia, while Ekaterina Lebdeva had the other goal. Christina Kessler (Mississauga, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) played nets for Canada in the Meco Cup final for the win.

Finland beat Germany 6-3 in the bronze medal game. In the fifth-place game, Sweden beat Switzerland 4-3 in overtime.
