NANJI NOTCHES SHOOTOUT GAME-WINNER FOR YELLOW

Rockland, Ont. – Twelve players came up short in a shootout before Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.) finally sealed the deal for Yellow, helping her team edge Blue 3-2 – and even up the intersquad series at one win apiece – in a fast-paced games that kept fans entertained Sunday night.

But before Nanji stole the show for Yellow, it was Laura Fortino (Hamilton, Ont.) who had the spotlight on the ice, scoring the sole two goals in the first for Blue to put her team up 2-0 going into intermission.

Yellow seemed determined to dig its self out of the two-goal deficit, however, skating hard to the puck in the second and putting the offensive pressure on Blue. Laura McIntosh (Waterloo, Ont.) finally carried it out front and sent a sniper into the back of the Blue net midway through the period, while her team was shorthanded, narrowing the gap to 2-1 before the period was up.

Both teams kept up the momentum in the third, with players on either side playing quick, smart hockey. Kristine Grenier (St. Léon, Man.) was able to tie it up for Yellow in the last four minutes of the game, with a Nanji assist, to send it into five minutes of four-on-four OT.

But neither team could get control of the puck long enough in OT to let a good shot go, and it wasn’t long before time on the extra frame ran out, forcing the game into what ended up being a 14-player shootout. Nanji was the only player to bury the biscuit, as Yellow netminder Amanda Mazzotta (London, Ont.) and Blue goaltender Erica Howe (Orleans, Ont.) stood their ground between the posts.

The third and final Blue-Yellow intersquad game at Canada’s National Women’s Under-22/Development Team camp takes place Tuesday, August 16 at 10 a.m. ET, also at the Canadian International Hockey Academy in Rockland.
