Series vs. United States
Canada’s National Women’s Under 22 Team fell 3-1 to Team USA in the first match of a three game exhibition series played at Lake Placid, NY on Wednesday night. Brittony Chartier of Saskatoon, SK made two sparkling saves during a first period Team USA two man advantage to keep the game scoreless at the end of the frame. Kelly Stephens opened the scoring for the Americans by banging home a rebound on a power play early in the second period. Stephens added her second power play marker mid way through the frame by setting up a screen in front of Chartier and deflecting a Molly Engstrom point shot.
Team Canada came out strong to start the third but were not able to solve Rebecca Lahar in the American net until Katie Weatherston of Thunder Bay, ON scored on a wrap around play to put Canada on the board with 2:05 remaining in the game. Team USA replied right away less than twenty seconds later when Natalie Darwitz tipped home a rebound off of a centring pass.
Game two of the series will be played Thursday night in Lake Placid with the setting changing to the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT for the third game on Saturday.
