2016-17 National Women's Under-18 Team

Canada 2 - United States 6

CANADA FALLS TO U.S. TO EVEN UNDER-18 SERIES

JASON LA ROSE

CALGARY, Alta. – Daryl Watts (Toronto, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) and Brette Pettet (Kentville, N.S./Shattuck-St. Mary’s, USHS) scored goals, but Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team dropped a 6-2 decision Friday night to the United States in the middle contest of a three-game series.

The loss evens the series at a win apiece, and sets up the finale on Sunday morning (noon ET/9 a.m. PT) as winner-take-all between the North American rivals.

It’s the first time the Canadians have ever lost by four goals to the Americans; Friday’s game was the 40th all-time meeting between the teams, and Canada still holds a narrow 21-19 advantage.

“I think tonight we got away from the little things that we were doing last night and even our battle level on loose pucks there were a lot of scrambles around the front of the net and we just didn’t have the same level of compete that we did last night,” Canadian head coach Troy Ryan said following the game. “It’s something we have to get back on track for Sunday.”

Trying to build off their series-opening win, the Canadians instead found themselves in a very early two-goal hole; Taylor Wente knocked a puck past goaltender Jaimie Rainville (Welland, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) just 68 seconds in, and Gabrielle Hughes finished a two-on-one for the 2-0 goal at 5:03.

Clair DeGeorge struck on an American power to make it 3-0 late in the opening frame, but Watts took a long pass from Courtney Vorster (Richmond, B.C./Shattuck-St. Mary’s, USHS) and snuck a shot past U.S. netminder Lindsay Reed to get the Canadians on the board in the dying seconds of the first.

The Americans added to their lead midway through the second period when Maureen Murphy found a loose puck in the slot, but Pettet jumped on a rebound just 51 seconds later to get Canada back within two.

The momentum was short-lived, however; Corinne Schroeder (Elm Creek, Man./Balmoral Hall School, JWHL) – who replaced Rainville after the Murphy goal – couldn’t squeeze a Delaney Drake shot and Taylor Heise poked in the loose puck to send the U.S. to the intermission up 5-2.

Canada could only manage two shots on goal in the third period, and a Catherine Skaja goal for the Americans just under four minutes into the final stanza capped the scoring.

“I think we just have to learn from the mistakes we had tonight and build off them and get our minds into the game earlier,” Vorster said. “We never gave up, we kept on pushing and showed resilience tonight, so we just have to bring that out and work a little harder.”

The Canadians have never lost a summer series to the United States on Canadian ice, dating back to the inaugural three-game set in August 2007 in Ottawa, Ont.
