Canada 7 - Germany 0

CANADA DUMPS GERMANY 7-0 AT 2013 IIHF U18 WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

VIERUMÄKI, Finland – Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team capped off a perfect preliminary round Tuesday with a 7-0 rout of Germany to secure first place in Pool A at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship.

Halli Krzyzaniak (Neepawa, Man./Pursuit of Excellence, Midget AAA) scored two goals to help Canada (3-0) secure a berth in semifinal action Friday, Jan. 4.

“We started out slow but as the game progressed, we started rolling and things started going our way,” alternate captain Krzyzaniak. “The bounces were going our way towards the end.”

The overmatched Germans held Canada off the scoresheet for the first half of the opening period at Vierumäki Arena.
Krzyzaniak put Canada on the board and Hanna Bunton (Belleville, Ont./Whitby, PWHL) added another goal 21 seconds later. Catherine Daoust (Île-Bizard, Que./Saint-Laurent, Collégial AA) scored a power-play goal late in the first period to notch her first goal wearing the Team Canada jersey.

Ashleigh Brykaliuk (Brandon, Man./Westman, MFMHL) and Krzyzaniak tallied in the second period, while Sarah Nurse (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) and Hannah Miller (North Vancouver, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, JWHL) added insurance goals in the final stanza. Nurse’s goal marked her first on international ice.
Jessica Dodds (London, Ont./London, PWHL) earned her first international shutout, as Canada outshot Germany 67-5.

Head coach Jim Fetter said the Canadian players are becoming more comfortable with each other and are buying into the game plan.

“The one thing we've been talking to the girls about is sticking with the process and it's starting to show its effects now,” he said.

The United States (3-0) dumped Sweden 8-0 to wrap up top spot in Pool B and the other quarter-final bye. Quarter-final games are scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 2 and the medal games will be played Saturday, Jan. 5.
Canada won last year's world championship in the Czech Republic.
