LATE DUFAULT GOAL FORCES EXTRA TIME, BUT CANADA FALLS SHORT IN OT

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man.) completed Canada’s comeback from an early 2-0 deficit, scoring with just six seconds to go to force overtime, but it would not be enough as the National Women’s Under-18 Team fell 3-2 to the United States on Thursday afternoon.

The loss is Canada’s second in as many days against its rivals – it dropped the opener of the three-game series 4-1 on Wednesday.

After being outshot 42-19 on Wednesday, Canada looked to be headed towards a similar fate in Game 2 after the U.S. held a 16-6 advantage in shots on goal after just one period on Thursday, and a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Haley Skarupa and Hannah Brandt.

But the Canadian side picked up its game in the middle frame, outshooting the Americans in a period for the first time in the series and pulling to within a goal when Erin Ambrose (Keswick, Ont.) and Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ont.) set up Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont.) for a power play marker midway through the period.

With two of the first three goals coming on the power play, it was no surprise the third period was a battle of special teams, with both teams killing off a pair of penalties in the first 15 minutes of the final frame, keeping it a one-goal game into the dying minutes.

Canada caught a late break when the U.S.’ Paige Savage was called for interference with 54 seconds to go, and enjoyed a 6-on-4 for the remainder of regulation when netminder Amanda Makela (Thunder Bay, Ont.) went to the bench in the dying seconds. The Canadian power play took advantage, with Dufault beating American goaltender Shenae Lundberg at 19:54 to force the extra session.

It would be the American power play that would be the difference, however, as Karley Sylvester beat Makela for the game-winner 3:17 into OT, with Stacey off for roughing.

For the second-straight day the U.S. held a sizable advantage in shots on goal, outshooting the Canadians 41-24.

The teams will enjoy an off day Friday before wrapping up the series on Saturday morning (10 a.m. ET) at the Lake Placid Olympic Center.
