2009-10 National Women's Under-18 Team

Canada 3 - United States 1

THIRD PERIOD OFFENCE HELPS CANADA TO UNDER-18 SERIES WIN

CALGARY, Alta. - Thanks to its veterans, and a little bit of youth, Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team has earned a series win over the United States.

Christine Bestland (Brunkild, Man.) and Jessica Campbell (Melville, Sask.) – both of whom played on Canada’s silver medal-winning team at the 2009 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship – scored third-period goals as Canada scored a 3-1 win on Thursday afternoon at the Pengrowth Saddledome, winning the three-game series 2-1.

Fifteen-year-old Erin Ambrose (Keswick, Ont.), Canada’s youngest player, scored for the second time in as many nights to account for the other goal as Canada earned a series win over the U.S. for the second time in three years.

It was the Americans who came out with jump in the opening period, outshooting their northern neighbours 14-5 and taking a 1-0 lead on Amanda Pelkey’s power play goal.

Just as she did on Thursday, Ambrose got the Canadians on the board, her point shot finding its way through the five-hole of American goaltender Alex Rigsby with the man advantage, pulling Canada even just shy of the game’s midway point.

Outshot 21-12 through 40 minutes, Canada took its first lead of the game when Bestland took a pass from Campbell, stepped into the slot and slipped a shot through Rigsby’s pads.

Bestland returned the favour late in the final frame, feeding Campbell for the empty net insurance goal.

Netminders Erica Howe (Orleans, Ont.) and Carmen MacDonald (Pictou, N.S.) split the duties between the pipes, with Howe turning aside 18 of 19 shots to keep the Canadians in the game. MacDonald stopped nine of nine to record the win, her second in less than 24 hours.
