Game Summary
Canada  2 -  Sweden  3

HODONIN, Czech Republic – Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team outshot and outchanced Sweden on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough as Canada suffered a 3-2 shootout loss at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka.

Kevin King (Calgary, AB/Kootenay, WHL) and Phillipe Cornet (Val d’Or, QC/Rimouski, QMJHL) scored for Canada.

King’s goal came at 16:45 of the first period, when he finished off a nice set up from Kelsey Tessier (Fredericton, NB/Quebec, QMJHL). Nazem Kadri (London, ON/Kitchener, OHL), who was named Canada’s Player of the Game, picked up the other assist on the goal.

Cornet’s goal came at 2:31 of the third period, with Canada on the powerplay. Cody Hodgson (Markham, ON/Brampton, OHL) made a great cross-crease pass to Cornet, who one-timed the puck past Swedish netminder Jacob Markstrom. David Toews (Winnipeg, MB/Shattuck St. Mary’s, USHS) also assisted on the goal.

Sweden, which was outshot 40-31, won in large part due to the work of Markstrom. He made several outstanding saves during the course of the game, but saved his best work for the shootout.

Markstrom stopped Kyle Beach (Kelowna, BC/Everett, WHL), Tessier and Canada’s captain Steven Stamkos (Unionville, ON/Sarnia, OHL) in the shootout.

Peter Delmas (Bedford, NS/Lewiston, QMJHL) matched Markstrom in great play throughout the game. Delmas stopped the first two Swedish shooters – Henrik Bjorklund and Mattias Tedenby – but failed to turn away Sweden’s last shooter, Anton Lander.

Tedenby scored both of Sweden’s goals during regulation time.

Canada earned one point for the shootout loss, while Sweden picked up two points.

Canada returns to the ice on Wednesday against Switzerland (3:30 p.m. local, 9:30 a.m. ET) in Hodonin, before wrapping up the round robin on Thursday against the Czech Republic.
